Self-Love is Caring

Daily Dose - April 23, 2020

Self-love considers our health and well-being needs. Self-love makes decisions and takes actions to care for those needs. The scripture says that love is not self-seeking and does not insist on its own way meaning to act without consideration of the needs of others – to mow down others in pursuit of one’s own ambitions and desires. This becomes a tricky concept with respect to loving ourselves.

Oftentimes, this scripture and/or sentiment is used to guilt us into actions that actually harm our mental stability, violate our beliefs, suppress our gifts, drain our bank accounts, or even hurt us physically.

Taking actions to protect ourselves from mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, or financial abuse, exploitation, manipulation, and oppression is NOT self-seeking, selfish, or self-serving. It is essential, self-love.

Before making a decision, taking action, or agreeing to a request, let us ask ourselves: will this build me up or tear me down mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, or financially? If the answer is “tear me down,” take the situation to God in prayer or seek godly counsel for guidance on how to proceed in a manner that honors your beliefs, values, and who you are as a child of God.

Take care with yourself in all situations.

Self-Love Affirmation

Just for today, I love myself with intentional self-care. I honor my right to say no. I have the right to change my mind. I have the right to be safe. I am free to choose a different direction. I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I am becoming all God created me to be. I love you, [your name here]!

Open and Receive:

  • Stand in front of a mirror.
  • Look into your eyes.
  • Say the affirmation aloud.
  • Repeat several times throughout the day.

It may feel strange, but keep trying! Let the truth set you free.

Self-Love Nightcap

I am fascinated by the show “Air Disasters.” To be sure, I do not look forward to learning about any loss of life. The natural investigator and process improvement enthusiast in me does enjoy the root cause analysis afterward.

Oftentimes, crashes occur due to a failure to follow the process. In one episode, the emergency checklist failed to direct the pilots to put on their oxygen masks. Had they done so, they would have been able to regain control over the airplane. Instead, they lost consciousness and the plane went down.

The same principle applies to self-care. As the scripture intimates in 1 Timothy 3:5, we can only care for others – to include our mission and calling – after we learn to care for ourselves.

Though cliche, this warning is the truth: you must put your own oxygen mask on first before attempting to help someone else. When your oxygen runs out, you will become incapacitated and unable to help yourself or anyone else.

It is permissible and biblical to care for your needs first.
